Saskatchewan Delays Adoption of Tier Three Energy Efficiency Standards to 2026

Saskatchewan has postponed the adoption of tier three energy efficiency standards until January 2026. This delay provides an opportunity to refine key aspects of the provincial building code, including solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) requirements. A technical committee will work with Saskatchewan officials to address these issues, following similar changes made in Alberta.

The decision reflects the Government of Saskatchewan's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents by promoting safe, energy-efficient, and affordable buildings. Stakeholder input is valued in shaping an effective regulatory framework that supports growth while maintaining competitiveness with other provinces.

In January 2024, Saskatchewan adopted the 2020 National Building Code (NBC) under The Construction Codes Act, setting tier two and tier three energy efficiency requirements for residential buildings. The delay extends the original January 2025 deadline for tier three implementation, allowing builders more time to meet these standards.
